Harnesses & Equiptment

Stopping pain at the source with harnesses designed for donkeys.

Our harnesses are life-enhancing tools crafted within our sanctuary workshop. Combining durable canvas with recycled padding, each piece is meticulously engineered to distribute pressure evenly and prevent sores. Through our dedicated workshop and mobile outreach clinics, we ensure working donkeys across the region receive these vital replacements.

Built for Oxen, Worn by Donkeys

Most harnesses in use today were never designed for donkeys. They're improvised from whatever is available or inherited from equipment made for a different animal altogether. None of it is built to fit a donkey's frame, and the mismatch causes rubbing, chafing, and wounds.

The Background:

When donkeys were introduced to Zambia to replace oxen lost to disease, they inherited the oxen's equipment too. Ox yokes are heavy, roughly hewn wooden frames, never designed for the slim, fragile necks of donkeys. Where proper equipment isn't available or affordable, owners often make do with whatever they can find: plastic, rope, twine, nylon, or a car or truck chassis with a tree trunk lashed on for a shaft, far too heavy for the animal pulling it.

Donkeys are built to pull through their chest and withers. The wrong equipment causes friction wounds that worsen with sweat, dust, and the weight of the load. It also leads to exhaustion, lameness, and injuries that often go untreated; especially in extreme heat, over long distances, and where access to veterinary care is scarce. Most owners care deeply about their animals, but without the right knowledge or materials, this kind of suffering is common.

Designed for Comfort

Our harnesses are meticulously crafted to fit the donkey and address the problem directly. The materials are sustainable and locally sourced, and every piece is designed to eliminate friction and prevent injury. They're cost-effective, accessible, and easy to reproduce.

Accountability

Each cart we modify is marked with a number to track the cart and its owner. This keeps the programme accountable. If we come across a cart still fitted with an old yoke, we can follow up and address repeat cases accordingly.

Distribution Methods

We use a two-pronged approach to ensure that every working donkey in need has access to our life-enhancing, padded harnesses.

Sanctuary Workshop

At our on-site workshop community members bring their donkeys directly to our experts for custom fitting, ensuring each harness is perfectly adjusted to the individual animal's frame.

Mobile Outreach Clinics

To reach those who cannot travel to the sanctuary, our mobile teams operate weekly clinics in surrounding villages. This ensures that even the most remote working donkeys receive vital harness replacements and veterinary checks.

"Since the introduction of the new padded harnesses and mobile workshops, we've seen a 60% reduction in neck sores. The donkeys are healthier, and community members are seeing the direct link between animal comfort and community productivity."
