Hunter is one of the many heartbreaking cases we respond to through our emergency calls.
In June 2026, we received an emergency call about three donkeys who had been attacked with an axe by unknown individuals. When our team arrived, all three were suffering from severe, fresh wounds. Immediate treatment was provided, followed by regular visits to clean, dress and monitor their wounds as they healed.
One of the three donkeys made a full recovery, while Hunter and his friend Kabucha were brought to Maramba Farm for closer care and continued treatment. After several weeks of daily care, both began to show great improvement. Kabucha was able to make a full recovery and return home to his owners, but Hunter’s injuries were much more severe and meant that he could no longer return to work.
Hunter has now been permanently retired at Maramba Farm. Here, he no longer has to worry about where he will graze or what might happen to him. He is safe, cared for, and surrounded by the rescue herd, with a peaceful future ahead of him.
