Education & Owner Support
Education is central to everything we do. We reach working donkeys through the people who interact with them daily, including owners, community members, children, and traditional and government leaders.
Working donkeys thrive when the people around them understand how to care for them and recognise their emotions and needs. Education and owner support represent a collective effort to sustain donkey welfare throughout for future generations in Zambia.
School Education Programme
Partnering with schools in Southern Province, Zambia, we deliver weekly animal welfare sessions teaching children how to best care for working animals, particularly donkeys.
We aim to integrate these lessons into the official school curriculum, advancing comprehensive animal welfare across communities and cultivating awareness in the next generation to prevent abuse.
In 2025, we reached 560 children through 55 sessions.

Community Sensitisation & Outreach Clinics
We conduct weekly community education and sensitisation sessions across southern Zambian villages, gathering all community members, both owners and non-owners, to discuss animal welfare needs. These talks share practical skills in animal care, health, and welfare using locally accessible resources, helping communities understand how to better care for working donkeys.
By engaging entire communities, we ensure comprehensive, community-wide understanding and education that spreads consistent welfare knowledge throughout villages.

Community Livestock Officers (CLOs)
Community Livestock Officers are trusted community members whom wee train as local welfare champions. Selected for their exemplary animal husbandry and the respect they command in their communitiesy respect, CLOs educate fellow owners, report welfare concerns between our visits, and provide ongoing follow-up. This transforms single training sessions into sustained local impact.

Traditional Leadership & Government Partnership
We engage traditional leaders and village heads to establish community-level accountability, creating local enforcement structures where leaders hold owners to welfare standards. Simultaneously, we partner with government ministries and agencies to align grassroots efforts with broader policy initiatives, ensuring welfare standards persist beyond individual programme visits.

Together, these programmes reach over 100 villages annually, extending impact far beyond the animals we treat directly. Current and future owners, children, and communities gain the knowledge, attitudes, and practices that reduce preventable suffering for donkeys and all working animals in their care.
